Meet the crew

Maggie's family face some important decisions about her future education - but following heart surgery in 2010, the little girl is capable of anything, as her proud family will tell you

"Maggie loves cheering on the Belfast Giants with her family"

Our daughter, Maggie, is a very happy and sociable 32-month-old little girl. She was born on January 16, 2010. Shortly after her birth, we were informed that Maggie had Down’s syndrome and nine days later, that she had a VSD heart condition.

Maggie had her heart surgery in June 2010 when she was five-months-old. Since having her surgery, she has made a remarkable recovery. She attends CDC in Lurgan once a month for physiotherapy and speech therapy. Maggie is walking unaided now and is learning Makaton. She loves watching Mr Tumble on TV, this has helped considerably with the Makaton for both Maggie and ourselves.

As Maggie approaches her third birthday, we will have important decisions to make regarding her nursery education. We are on the waiting list for Donard School in Banbridge and we are looking at the possibility of mainstream education with Maggie having an assistant.

Maggie has a younger baby brother called Calum. They are great company for each other, only being 15 months apart in age. As a family, we all love going to see the Belfast Giants play at the Odyssey. Maggie loves cheering on her team and meeting new people.

We joined Down's & Proud in September 2010, the support from the other parents and hearing about their experiences and about their children is reassuring. We look forward to the Christmas Party every year and this year Maggie attended the Summer Scheme, where she had a fabulous time playing with her friends. The highlight of the week was the trip to the Donkey Sanctuary in Templepatrick. Maggie loved her ride on the donkey a lot. Down’s and Proud is a fantastic group and we look forward to being part of the group for many years to come.

Joanne, Stevie, Calum and, of course, Maggie Marks.
